Canadian Telecom regulator fines Telemarketers for calling on Do-not-Call list

Canada’s Radio and Telecommunication Commission (CRTC), which maintains a National Do Not Call List (DNCL) has penalized the telemarketers who called on the numbers registered with DNCL. CRTC is an independent public body responsible for regulating the telecommunications in the country.

 

It has formulated the ‘Unsolicited Telecommunications Rules’ which outline what kind of telecommunication should not occur. The rule number 4 of these Rules says clearly – “A telemarketer shall not initiate, and a client of a telemarketer shall make all reasonable efforts to ensure that the telemarketer does not initiate, a telemarketing telecommunication to a consumer's telecommunications number that is on the National DNCL, unless express consent has been provided by such consumer to be contacted via a telemarketing telecommunication by that telemarketer or the client of that telemarketer.” This rule was breached when two Tele-marketers - Pecon Software Ltd and Avaneesh Software Ltd made calls to people who had DNCL registration. The Call Center Agents of these firms would call people for selling online technical support services. CRTC says that these telemarketers would warn customers that their computer is infected by virus and they should urgently get it fixed by availing the online technical support. They also offered to remote access their systems. CRTC has fined Pecon $495,000, while Avaneesh has been fined $12,000 for such calls.
 
 
However, this incident is an exceptional one. Otherwise there are thousands of Telemarketing offshore Call Center vendors which are executing perfectly reliable services which are a win-win for the company and the customers both. Telemarketing services are indeed a great opportunity of personalized and customized selling. If you are a business, you just have to ensure that the call center company whom you outsource to is a credible vendor. Also you should preferably always give a list of callers from your end, and NEVER include DNCL callers in the telemarketing list. With a few precautions, telemarketing campaign can work wonders for your business and get you unprecedented profits.
