Sandy reminds why all Call Centers should have a Disaster Management and Disaster Recovery System |
The superstorm Sandy has claimed more than sixteen lives till now. Other big casualties of the storm are the state-run call centers and the mobile towers. More than 25 percent of towers and other sites related to telecom operations have been hit by the blusters of this devastating hurricane, including the inbound call center for handling 911 emergency calls. So along with a power cut, there is also a communication outage.
This has adversely affected cellular services in more than 10 states of America. The federal regulators have conceded that the situation could further worsen. The surviving cell towers are running on generators with fuel, but the fuel is likely to run out sooner than the regular power is restored, as told by the Federal Communications Commission. The 911 call center, which is for handling all the emergency calls, is not just receiving a spike in the call volume but its facilities at a few locations have also been snapped. This has resulted in re-routing of calls, which means now the information about the location of the caller is not available – which is actually crucial for the policemen and firemen for rescuing the caller. The water which surged in the southern Manhattan has inundated one of the communications nodes, which happen to be one of the densest in the world.
This, coupled with no electricity in the Data Center has also brought down some popular websites. Many companies on the Wall Street were turned dysfunctional and their operations brought to a standstill.
